A Truncated Meta Description, and the Ending Nobody Sees
Our own hosting site carries a meta description of 163 characters. The report flags it as meta description will truncate, at low severity, and the three characters past the line are the last letters of the final word.
That is the whole finding.
Not a description that is missing. Not one that says nothing useful. Three characters, on a page that scores 97 for SEO and would score a clean 100 without them.
Where the cut happens
The snippet is the block of text a search engine shows under your page title, and it is usually built from your meta description when you have written one. Results give it a limited width, and the report draws that line at 160 characters.
Past the line the tail is simply dropped, so the reader gets a sentence that stops mid-thought. Nothing breaks and nothing is penalised. The page still ranks on the signals it always did, because the description was never a ranking factor. What you lose is the ending you wrote, which is often where the reason to click was sitting.
The check measures the raw length of the attribute, so it is counting characters rather than estimating how wide your snippet will render on someone else’s screen.
How far past the line it can run
Ours reads “Enterrahost offers powerful WooCommerce plugins like Blue Raven to boost SEO, automate product management, and drive eCommerce growth with smart tools and support.”
That is 163 characters, and the part past the line is the end of the word support. Remove three characters and it lands inside the band.
Not every case is that marginal though. One test we hold measured a description at 307 characters, close to double the limit, and the report flagged it in exactly the same way.
Both carry low severity and both cost three points, because the check reads length rather than quality. It never asks whether the description is any good, only whether it crosses 160.
What a long meta description costs
The description is worth twelve points of the SEO score when it is present and inside the band. Outside the band it keeps nine, so the length itself costs three.
Through the pillar weighting that is 0.6 of a point on the overall score. On our own report it is the difference between an SEO of 97 and a clean 100, and trimming the three characters would move the overall from 85 to 86.
That is a real gain and it is also the smallest one available anywhere in this report, which is what a low severity flag is telling you.
Fix it because it is nearly free.
Cutting without losing the point
Front-load the sentence. The opening is the part that survives, so the reason to click belongs in the first clause rather than the last one.
Trim from the end rather than the middle, because a description that trails off loses less than one that has been hollowed out. Ours ends with the words and support, which reads like a phrase added to fill the space it was supposed to fill. It is also the first thing that should go.
Cut the boilerplate openers. A sentence beginning we are a leading provider of has spent twenty characters saying nothing, and those twenty are the difference between a complete thought and a truncated one.
Do not cram the keyword in.
Google rewrites it anyway
Search engines frequently rewrite the snippet from the page itself, so a description of exactly the right length is still no guarantee that it is the text a searcher sees. What you are buying is the chance that yours is the one shown, and the discipline of having decided what the page is actually about.
That is why this finding sits at low severity while a missing description does not. With nothing written, the search engine has to build the snippet out of whatever text it finds, and that is usually the first paragraph on the page, which is rarely the most useful sentence on it.
So treat the length as housekeeping. The missing description is the finding that carries real weight, worth twelve points rather than three.
